Performing Arts FAQ

Performing Arts FAQ

Who can audition?

High school seniors and those looking to enroll at Dakota Wesleyan in the coming year.

How do I sign up for an audition?

To sign up, fill out an inquiry form on our Performing Arts Scholarship page.

Do I have to be a major or minor in that area to receive a scholarship?

At DWU, you do not have to be a music or theatre, major or minor, to receive scholarships in those areas.

Can I audition for and receive scholarships in all of the fine arts areas I am interested in?

Yes! In fact, many of our students are involved with more than one department.

What should I perform and where can I find audition pieces?

For vocal auditions, students should prepare one or two vocal solos of contrasting styles. Pop music is not appropriate for this audition, but rather music that you would sing for a vocal contest or in private voice lessons. If you do not have a solo, a director can provide guidance on how to prepare for the audition.

For piano auditions, prepare two concert solos: one from the Baroque or Classical period and the other from the Romantic period to the present.

For instrumental auditions, prepare one appropriate solo. Pop music is not appropriate for this audition, but rather music that you would play for a solo and ensemble contest, in lessons, or for an all-state audition.

For theatre scholarships or students wishing to enter the theatre program, please prepare one memorized piece, not exceeding three minutes.  We recommend to choose material that suits you and shows your ability to your best advantage. While we prefer the required dramatic monologues, you may also audition using an oral interp piece.

How long should my audition pieces be?

Vocal auditions: students should prepare two vocal solos

Piano auditions: students should prepare two concert solos

Instrumental auditions: students should prepare one appropriate solo

Theatre auditions: students should prepare one memorized piece, not exceeding three minutes.

Will you provide an accompanist for my audition?

You may bring your own accompanist or one can be provided for you. Please communicate with the directors before your audition as to if you will be needing an accompanist or providing your own.

When will I know what time my audition is, and how long will it take?

Once you sign up for an audition, the director will contact you to discuss a date and time for the audition as well as how/what to prepare for your audition. Your audition will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Can I submit a video recording for my audition?

If you are unable to audition in person, you may submit a video recording by filling out this form and providing a link to your video.

We want to hear from you! Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!
